French Department at the Institute of Language Studies Commemorates International Francophone Day
Today, on April 19th, 2024, the Department of French within the Institute of Language Studies (IoLS) at Kabale University celebrated International Francophone Day, an annual event observed worldwide. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Créez et innovez en français” – “Create and Innovate in French”.
During the event, Assoc. Prof. Abubakar Kateregga, in his welcoming address, emphasized the significance of the day. He highlighted how stakeholders in French teaching and learning come together to assess the challenges and accomplishments in this domain. Various activities and exhibitions were organized to underscore the importance of French, recognized as one of the six working languages of the United Nations.
Assoc. Prof. Abubakar Kateregga further announced an initiative by the French department to reintroduce French teaching in the Kabale region. This initiative includes the establishment of French clubs in two secondary schools: Kabale Secondary School and St. Paul’s Seminary Rushoroza. As a result, a total of 50 students from these schools are expected to participate in the event, showcasing their presentations and contributions to promoting the French language.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor at the International Francophone Day event, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration expressed her satisfaction with the French department’s efforts to promote French language education. She highlighted the introduction of a French certificate short course, set to commence in August 2024, as a significant initiative.
Encouraging all interested individuals, including Kabale University students, staff, as well as secondary and primary school students in the district, she urged them to take advantage of their school holidays to enroll in the short certificate course.
Additionally, she extended gratitude to the French department for inviting the headteachers of Kabale Secondary School to participate in the International Francophone Day celebrations at Kabale University. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor reiterated her appreciation for the department’s endeavors to popularize French language education.
Mr. Byaruhanga M. Amon, the head teacher of Kabale Secondary School, graced the occasion as the guest of honor. He urged students to prioritize mastering the language, emphasizing the abundance of job opportunities accessible, particularly for those proficient in multiple languages.
