KAB Network Team Takes first place at Global Huawei ICT Competition 2023–2024
The Kabale University Network team secured first place in the Global Huawei ICT Competition 2023–2024. The team was honored with the Women in Technology Award, highlighting their exceptional talent and commitment to technological innovation.
The students that made up the team are WAKOOLI VIOLA RITAH, NASSANGA RACHEAL MARION and NAKABUUKA REEGINA DESIRE all finalists, doing Bachelor of Computer Science.
The students were flagged off for the competition by the First lady, Minister of Education and Sports of Uganda Maama Janet K. Museveni on Thursday 16th May 2024, at State House Nakasero where she wished them success as they represented Uganda in the Global Final ICT Competitions.
Speaking to REEGINA before they set off for the competition she expressed excitement and mentioned she was eager to participate in the competition specifically in network track.
Speaking during the ceremony, Uganda’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, HE Oliver Wonekha, emphasised the competition’s significance for Uganda and its students. “AI and digital transformation are the way forward. “It is important and timely that Huawei is leading this initiative,” she added.
19 teams from nine countries, including Algeria, China, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, the Philippines, Tanzania, Türkiye, and Uganda, emerged victorious in the Practice Competition and AI Innovation Competition. Additionally, one team from Pakistan received the Social Media Best Popularity Award, while two teams from China and Morocco were honored with the Green Development Honor Award. Four teams from Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, and Uganda won the Women in Science and Technology Honor Award, and two teams from China and the Philippines were awarded the TECH4ALL Digital Inclusion Honor Award.
The Grand prize was taken by the Network Track Team 1 (Gulu University and Muni University) with the First Prize taken by the Network Track Team 2 from Kabale University.
The Second Prize was taken by the Computing Track Team 1 from Muni University with Kabale University Network Team taking the Women In Tech Award.
The Huawei ICT Competition is a renowned international contest designed for students from Huawei ICT academies and higher education institutions eager to join the ICT Academy worldwide. The competition offers a platform for students to engage in healthy competition and exchange ideas, thereby enhancing their ICT knowledge and practical skills.
It also fosters their ability to innovate using advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and cloud computing to solve real-world problems and develop solutions with significant social and business value.
Since its inception in 2015, the Huawei ICT Competition has grown exponentially in its influence and reach. The 2023–2024 edition attracted over 170,000 students from more than 2,000 colleges and universities across 80 countries and regions. Over 160 teams, comprising more than 470 contestants from 49 different countries, reached the global final held in Shenzhen after excelling in their respective national and regional competitions.
