UNDP and Kabale University Set Stage for Launch of Business Innovation Hub to Spur Youth Entrepreneurship

As part of its commitment to strengthening innovation ecosystems in Uganda’s public universities, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is accelerating efforts to operationalize the Kabale University Business Incubation Centre, a state-of-the-art facility aimed at nurturing student-led innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation.

In 2023, UNDP signed a partnership agreement with Kabale University to establish the incubation hub; an initiative under the broader “Fostering Innovation Ecosystems in Uganda’s Public Universities” programme. The center, already equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure, is now at the final preparatory stage before its full launch, tentatively scheduled for October 2025.

Today, Kabale University had the honor of hosting Mr. Nathan Tumuhamye, Head of Exploration and Programme Analyst at UNDP Uganda, along with Mr. Guma Richard, Procurement Associate at UNDP. The duo was warmly welcomed by Dr. Byamukama Willbroad, a Lecturer in Agricultural Science and the University’s lead coordinator for the incubation hub.

Following a briefing, the entire team, together with university representatives and potential service providers, took a comprehensive tour around the premises. The tour offered an opportunity to assess the existing infrastructure, understand the spatial dynamics, and identify areas that need enhancement. This hands-on walkthrough provided a clearer picture of what needs to be done to transform the facility into a modern, student-centered innovation hub.

Dr. Byamukama expressed his appreciation for UNDP’s continued support, emphasizing the hub’s strategic role in equipping students with practical skills and tools for enterprise development.

During the visit, Mr. Tumuhamye underscored the need for a creative, student-friendly, and technologically forward environment that inspires innovation. “This space must reflect the vibrancy of the Kigezi region, its culture, nature, and spirit—while also signaling a forward-looking vision driven by technology and artificial intelligence,” he said. “We are not just building a facility. We are creating a launchpad for ideas that will shape the future of our youth and our nation.”

The Business Incubation Centre will offer access to mentorship, co-working spaces, investor networks, intellectual property services, and support to commercialize innovations, enabling students to build sustainable businesses even before graduation.

Service providers were encouraged to be both innovative and contextually aware in their proposals, integrating local art, design, and interior aesthetics to create a visually inspiring and functionally dynamic space.

The incubation centre will also complement Kabale University’s existing ICT Innovation Hub, further enhancing its capacity to serve both the university community and the wider Kigezi region. Together, these hubs aim to position the institution as a driver of innovation and inclusive development.

To meet the October 2025 launch timeline, service providers have been advised to submit their proposals early to allow for timely selection, procurement, and implementation.

As Uganda advances its innovation agenda, this initiative demonstrates UNDP’s continued commitment to unlocking the potential of youth, catalyzing entrepreneurship, and supporting community-centered growth through higher education institutions.
