Kabale University Hosts NSSF Career Expo 2026, Challenging Students to Embrace AI-Driven Future
Kabale University today hosted the 16th edition of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Career Expo at Kikungiri Church Hall, bringing together students, industry leaders, and career experts for a timely conversation on the future of work under the theme “Man or Machine: Exploring AI’s Impact on Careers.”
The Expo, a nationwide initiative by the National Social Security Fund Uganda, is designed to equip students and young professionals with practical skills, financial literacy, and strategic career insights in an increasingly digital and AI-driven global economy. This year’s engagement focused on how Artificial Intelligence is transforming industries, redefining job roles, and creating new opportunities for innovation and growth.
Representing the University Management, the Dean of Students, Mr. Amos Tukamushaba, welcomed participants and applauded NSSF for extending the initiative to Kabale University. He emphasized that while AI continues to evolve, human potential remains unmatched. “We are better than AI, but it enables us to know more,” he noted, urging students to strategically engage with the opportunity, network with industry players, and explore pathways for internships and employment.
Delivering a keynote address, David Rwamatungi Mwesigwa, Senior Manager for Regional Operations (Western Region) at NSSF, traced the evolution of technological disruption from the Industrial Revolution to the present-day AI era. He reassured students that AI should be viewed as a tool rather than a threat, encouraging them to focus on relevance in a rapidly changing job market.
“Society is evolving, and so must you,” he said. “Your ability to solve real societal problems will determine your value in the future workplace.” He also emphasized the importance of early financial planning, urging students to embrace NSSF’s voluntary saving schemes such as SmartLife Flexi, and to cultivate a strong culture of saving as a foundation for long-term security.
Mwesigwa further challenged students to take charge of their futures by acquiring market-relevant skills, safeguarding their mental health, and consistently questioning their purpose. “As you leave here, ask yourself why you do what you do,” he advised.
The Expo also featured insights from financial and technology leaders, including Rachel Rwakatungu, Credit Director at Absa Bank Uganda, who encouraged students to embrace AI as a tool for personal and professional growth. Drawing from her roots in Kabale, she inspired students to remain ambitious and adaptable, highlighting initiatives such as Absa Ready to Work that equip young people with digital and workplace skills.
From the technology perspective, Lameck Kavuma, Chief Operating Officer at AI Studio Uganda, highlighted AI’s vast potential to solve complex problems and improve efficiency. He noted that while Africa currently contributes only about 2% of global AI data, there is immense opportunity for innovation on the continent. “The future belongs to those willing to exploit AI,” he remarked, challenging students to position themselves as creators and problem-solvers.
The interactive session allowed students to engage directly with the speakers, raising critical questions on AI-related skills, ethical considerations such as bias in AI systems, and career prospects in emerging fields like AI engineering. Discussions also explored financial literacy topics, including the differences between NSSF savings and traditional banking, and the accessibility of social security benefits.
Adding excitement to the event, the Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Rudende Moses, facilitated a competitive quiz session where top-performing students earned opportunities for internship placements with NSSF—demonstrating the Expo’s commitment to linking learning with real-world opportunities.
The event also featured the exchange of appreciation gifts between NSSF, Absa Bank Uganda, to Kabale University, symbolizing a strong and growing partnership aimed at empowering the next generation.
Students who attended the Expo described it as insightful and transformative. Many expressed a renewed understanding of how to align their academic training with evolving market demands, while others appreciated the opportunity to directly interact with potential employers and mentors.
Through initiatives such as the Career Expo, NSSF continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Uganda’s workforce by promoting employability, entrepreneurship, and financial independence among young people.
Kabale University students have been encouraged to take full advantage of such platforms to build networks, acquire future-ready skills, and confidently navigate the dynamic world of work shaped by Artificial Intelligence.
