KAB to host South Western Uganda Region Water and Environment Celebrations

Kabale University together with the Ministry of Water and Environment through the Water resources Institutes (WRI) plus other stakeholders are in advanced stages of preparation for the South Western Uganda Water and Environment Week. This is an activity that involves creating awareness countrywide about the conservation and protection of our water resources and environment in general.

This year, the western Uganda celebrations shall be hosted by Kabale University. Preparations are underway to make the day successful. Different activities including a student radio debate on environmental issues, expert broadcast media talk show, community awareness, and engagement activities among others to create awareness and continuity of conservation shall be done in the week. These shall climax in a scientific symposium where different experts shall present papers.

The other international days to be commemorated are World Forest Day, World Water Day, and World Meteorological Day. This years’ National celebrations shall be on the theme ‘water and environment for peace and socio-economic transformation of Uganda. Several subthemes speak to the different aspects of the environment that shall be addressed.

These include:

  • Promoting peace and stability through water and environmental resources
  • Building resilience to various risks and shocks
  • Partnerships and inter-sectoral collaboration in water and environment and development
  • Financing Water, Environment, and Climate Change

The University Organising Committee to oversee the successful planning for the celebrations is chaired by the Dean Faculty of Engineering, Technology, Applied Design, and Fine Art, Assoc. Prof. Moses Nduhira Twesigye-omwe. In a meeting today, 1st of March 2022 with the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof Benon Basheka, the committee together with some Ministry of Water and Environment officials discussed ways of ensuring how the weeklong activities shall benefit the whole South Western Uganda region.
