Kabale University Convocation Engages Rwanda Alumni, Strengthens Cross-Border Alumni Network

The Kabale University Convocation Executive Committee has undertaken a strategic engagement with Kabale University alumni in Kigali, Rwanda, as part of efforts to strengthen the University’s alumni network, deepen alumni participation in institutional development, and chart a shared vision for the future of the Convocation.

The delegation, led by the Convocation Executive Committee, visited Kigali on Saturday, 19 September 2026, where it met with Kabale University alumni based in Rwanda. The engagement provided a platform for the University’s leadership and alumni to reconnect, exchange ideas, and discuss strategies for strengthening the Kabale University Alumni Association.

Strengthening Alumni Participation and Institutional Development

A key focus of the engagement was to explore practical strategies for mobilizing more Kabale University alumni to actively participate in the affairs of the Alumni Association, including fulfilling the annual membership subscription of Shs 20,000 per member.

The meeting also explored potential projects that the Convocation could undertake as a contribution to the development of Kabale University. Members discussed the importance of alumni taking ownership of initiatives that can leave a lasting mark on their alma mater and contribute to the University’s growth.

The delegation further brainstormed ideas that will inform the development of the Kabale University Convocation’s five-year strategic plan. The proposed plan is expected to provide a framework for strengthening the Convocation, expanding alumni engagement, and enhancing its contribution to the University’s institutional priorities.

The Rwanda-based alumni expressed their commitment to remaining connected to Kabale University and supporting its continued development. They also pledged to remain active members of the University community and contribute to initiatives aimed at strengthening the institution.

Convocation Leadership Calls for a Stronger Alumni Network

Addressing the gathering, the Chairperson of the Kabale University Convocation Mr. Isaiah Byarugaba Kanyamahane expressed appreciation to the Rwanda alumni for their continued commitment to and affection for Kabale University.

The Chairperson commended the alumni for maintaining a strong connection with their alma mater and encouraged them to continue working together to support the University’s development.

The Academic Registrar Mr. Tibenderana Narcicir also shared strategies for strengthening the Kabale University Alumni Association, highlighting some of the initiatives the Convocation has already undertaken.

Among these initiatives is the contribution of trees for planting within the University as part of efforts to promote environmental conservation and leave a lasting legacy on campus.

The Academic Registrar encouraged alumni to continue coming together and actively contributing to the development of the University. He emphasized that alumni engagements should extend beyond Kabale and reach different parts of Uganda and other countries where Kabale University graduates are found.

He noted that such engagements would help strengthen the bond between the University and its alumni while promoting a shared vision for the future of Kabale University.

The Academic Registrar also shared plans to acquire a university coaster to support institutional activities and encouraged alumni to pay their annual subscriptions as one of the ways they can collectively contribute towards making the initiative a reality.

Delegation Visits Kigali Genocide Memorial

Given the historical and bilateral ties between Uganda and Rwanda, the delegation also used the visit to connect with Rwanda’s history and heritage.

The team visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi, where it was welcomed by a representative of Aegis Trust, the organization associated with the memorial.

During the visit, the delegation donated and toured the memorial grounds, where members paid their respects to the people who lost their lives during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The delegation also attended a one-hour educational lecture on the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi. The lecture covered the planning and implementation of the genocide, as well as the events that brought it to an end.

The visit provided members of the delegation with an opportunity to learn about Rwanda’s history and the importance of remembrance, education, reconciliation, and the prevention of genocide.

Rwanda Alumni Call for Annual Engagements

The Rwanda Alumni, through their head, Shantel, requested that similar engagements be prioritized by the Convocation Executive Committee and conducted annually.

The request was presented as an opportunity to sustain the relationship between Kabale University and its alumni in Rwanda, while providing a regular platform for alumni to share ideas, strengthen networks, and participate in the University’s development agenda.

The Kigali engagement therefore marked an important step in strengthening the relationship between Kabale University and its alumni beyond Uganda’s borders.

As the Convocation works towards developing its five-year strategic plan, the engagement in Rwanda provided valuable perspectives on alumni mobilization, institutional support, networking, and sustainable ways of keeping graduates connected to their alma mater.

Kabale University continues to recognize its alumni as important partners in advancing the University’s vision and development. The Convocation’s continued engagement with alumni in Uganda and beyond is expected to strengthen this partnership and create new opportunities for alumni to contribute to the University’s growth.
