Canon Mathew Rukikaire Installed as Kabale University Chancellor

Kabale University has officially installed Canon Mathew Rukikaire as its new Chancellor, following his appointment by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in late 2025. He succeeds Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, whose tenure came to an end on April 28, 2025.

The installation ceremony, held yesterday at the Kabale University grounds, was officiated by the Vice President Jessica Alupo, who represented the President in his capacity as Visitor of the University. In her address, the Vice President applauded Kabale University for its steady growth and increasing recognition as a centre of excellence, particularly in science education, tourism, and information technology. She emphasized the institution’s important role in equipping graduates with practical skills and competencies necessary for national transformation.

In his farewell remarks, Prof. Kagonyera reflected on his decade of service and formally handed over a comprehensive report highlighting the university’s achievements during his tenure. He expressed appreciation to the university community for their support and commended students for their discipline, strong values, and commitment to academic excellence. He further expressed confidence in his successor, noting that the university would continue to thrive under new leadership.

In his acceptance speech, Canon Rukikaire conveyed gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to build upon the solid foundation established by his predecessor. He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the university’s profile and strengthening its contribution to national development. He also acknowledged the continued support and leadership of President Museveni towards higher education in Uganda.

Later, during a luncheon held at White Horse Inn, the Chancellor reiterated his dedication to serving the university community and promoting its growth. He assured stakeholders of his full support throughout his tenure and expressed optimism that his leadership would leave a lasting and measurable impact.

Canon Rukikaire brings to the Chancellorship a wealth of experience shaped by decades of public service, leadership, and scholarship. Born in 1938 in Kabale, his life journey reflects both academic distinction and national service. He is an alumnus of prestigious institutions including Ntare School and King’s College Budo, where he served as Head Prefect, and later Makerere University, where he was Guild President in 1962 and subsequently Chairperson of the University Council.

His contribution to Uganda’s history is equally notable. During the liberation struggle that led to the rise of the National Resistance Movement, Canon Rukikaire played a pivotal role in supporting the resistance efforts. He later served in government, including as Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, demonstrating a commitment to integrity and principled leadership.

A Canon in the Anglican Church, an accomplished author, and a seasoned statesman, Canon Rukikaire returns to serve in his home region with a vision to further elevate Kabale University’s standing. His installation marks a significant milestone in the institution’s journey, ushering in a new chapter of leadership and growth.

The ceremony attracted a wide range of dignitaries, including university leadership, government officials, staff, students, and invited guests.
