Kabale University Equips 10th Guild Leaders with Vision for Transformative Leadership

DSC_0196Kabale University has taken a decisive step in strengthening student leadership, as the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joy Constance Kwesiga, guided the 10th Guild Government on responsible, informed, and impactful leadership during an orientation held on 28th April 2026 at Japhan Hostel, Makanga.

Addressing the newly elected leaders led by Guild President Justus Drake Kyarikunda, the Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of distinguishing between “noise” and genuine student concerns. She urged leaders to focus on issues that directly affect students’ academic and welfare experience, including delayed results, accommodation, lecture space, internet access, safety, mental health, and student-staff relations.

Prof. Kwesiga cautioned against the unregulated spread of information, particularly on social media, noting that while digital platforms are powerful tools, they must be used responsibly. She called on student leaders to embrace informed dialogue over confrontation, highlighting that discussions around national matters such as the Sovereignty Bill should prioritize engagement rather than demonstration, with strikes considered only as a last resort.

“You need to be knowledgeable as a student leader. Listen to news from various sources, not just social media. Read newspapers and stay informed,” she advised, stressing that leadership requires humility, accessibility, and unity. She further challenged leaders to foster open communication among students to address emerging concerns, including mental health challenges that have previously affected the student community.

He encouraged them to proactively identify challenges within the student body and work closely with university management to resolve them, reaffirming his office’s commitment to supporting their leadership journey.

Delivering insights on strategic leadership, the Principal Communication and Branding Officer, Mr. Godfrey Sempungu, emphasized the value of wisdom, communication, and empathy. He urged leaders to embrace “soft power” in solving real student issues, maintain professionalism, and follow institutional communication channels.

“Leadership is about solving practical problems. Communication is paramount, and accountability must guide your actions,” he noted, adding that leaders must align their initiatives with the university’s mission and policies while building strong relationships with management.

Counsel Johnson Oluga provided a governance perspective, highlighting the importance of accountability, transparency, and confidentiality in leadership. He reminded the Guild Government of its responsibility to represent student interests effectively while ensuring ethical conduct and institutional compliance.

On financial management, Assistant Internal Auditor Mr. Bright Lasiati urged leaders to develop sound budgeting and accountability practices, encouraging them to prioritize impactful projects and deliver measurable outcomes.

The orientation also addressed student welfare and inclusivity, with Assistant Counsellor Mr. Sayuni Musinguzi calling for empathetic leadership rooted in respect, transparency, and unity. He encouraged leaders to foster a sense of belonging and create a supportive environment for all students.

Adding a perspective on legacy driven leadership, Assistant Sports Officer Mr. Kato Muhumuza Wilfred challenged leaders to focus on service rather than titles. “A title gives you a seat, but a legacy tells your story,” He noted, urging them to make realistic commitments and deliver meaningful change.

In his remarks, Guild President H.E. Justus Drake Kyarikunda expressed gratitude to the university leadership for their guidance and pledged to translate the insights gained into tangible action. He reaffirmed the Guild Government’s commitment to advancing student welfare and delivering on its mandate.

The Guild Speaker, Rt. Hon. Nabasa Elia echoed the call for action, urging leaders to turn knowledge into results and make a lasting impact during their tenure.

The orientation marked a significant milestone in preparing the 10th Guild Government to lead with clarity, accountability, and purpose, reinforcing Kabale University’s commitment to nurturing responsible and transformative student leadership.DSC_0284
