Economics and Statistics Department staff participate in the Scientific Writing Workshop

The Department of Economics and Statistics within the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences (FEMS) has launched a Scientific Writing Capacity Strengthening Workshop.

The African Reproductive Health Center in Nairobi has generously funded the five-day intensive training, which will take place from January 18th to January 22nd, 2024 at White Horse Inn – Kabale.

Recognizing the importance of publications in facilitating shared learning, the department identified a critical need to improve its staff’s research writing skills.

The Scientific Writing Workshop aims to provide staff with the necessary skills to create manuscripts for publication in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. The emphasis will be on the practical application of Advanced Statistical/Econometric Models, particularly those capable of handling large datasets with complex designs such as repeated measurements, clustering, and longitudinal/panel data.

The workshop, inaugurated by the esteemed Faculty Dean, Professor Caleb Tamwesigire, is spearheaded by the Department of Economics and Statistics (DES). Prof. Tamwesigire emphasized the faculty’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for scientific scholarly research, intending to generate evidence that will inform future programming and national policy formulation.

“This workshop is a testament to our commitment to advancing research and contributing to the broader academic discourse. you, we aim to not only enhance your individual capacities but also contribute substantively to the national and sub-national policy landscape,” said Prof. Tamwesigire during the inauguration.

The workshop places a significant emphasis on the practical application of Advanced Statistical/Econometric Models. These models are designed to handle large datasets with intricate designs and structures, including repeated measurements, clustering, and longitudinal/panel variables.

The Scientific Writing Workshop is a multi-stage initiative encompassing training and mentorship for selected FEMS staff. The anticipated outcome is the development and submission of manuscripts to high-impact peer-reviewed journals, ensuring a tangible contribution to academic literature.

Also present was the Head of Department Dr. Ezra Munyambonera who said that the grant from the African Reproductive Health Center, Nairobi, has played a pivotal role in making this workshop a reality.

Speaking to members attending the workshop Dr. Ezra said that Academia is not only about teaching but also about writing papers therefore the staff needs to take the workshop seriously.

“This workshop not only aims to enhance the scientific writing skills of our staff but also to instill the fundamental principles that will resonate throughout their academic journey,” remarked Dr. Ezra Munyambonera.

The intensive five-day program will require daily commitment from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. With the ultimate goal of producing at least five manuscripts for submission to high-impact factor journals, the workshop will encompass mentorship at various stages, including topic identification, data analysis, manuscript development, and the publication process.

Co-authorship will be in accordance with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICJME) guidelines, acknowledging the significant contributions of trainers.
