Empowering Education Through Partnership: FAWE Uganda Engages Kabale University Leadership in Transformational Workshop
Kabale University today proudly hosted a high-impact workshop organized by the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Uganda Chapter, aimed at equipping university Deans with skills to foster a more inclusive and student-responsive learning environment.
In her opening remarks, Vice Chancellor Prof. Joy C. Kwesigwa warmly welcomed the FAWE team and commended them for their outstanding contribution to the education sector across Uganda. She reflected on FAWE’s early partnerships with institutions like Makerere, Mbarara, and Busitema universities, and celebrated Kabale University’s inclusion, alongside Kabale District’s recognition as a new beneficiary area in the program’s national rollout.
“We are truly grateful to be part of this impactful initiative,” Prof. Kwesigwa said. “This training will enable our staff to better engage with students, helping them navigate the challenges of university life.”
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Imelda Kemeza, a lead trainer from FAWE Uganda, who guided the participants through key thematic areas critical to student development beyond academics. Some of the topics included: Transition to the world of work, Financial literacy, Entrepreneurship, E-learning and multimedia tools for education and Community give-back initiatives among others. These areas form part of FAWE’s Extended Orientation Program (EOP), which equips students with life skills necessary for success both during and after university. The approach enriches traditional orientation programs by integrating mentorship and practical life preparation.
FAWE Uganda’s Programme Officer, Mr. Ken Rodgers Mutebi, elaborated on the organization’s broader mission. “We are here to support vulnerable youth, especially science students who completed Senior Six but were unable to attend university. Our models, including TUSEMU (Speak Up), Gender Responsive Pedagogy, and EOP, are tools to help students overcome barriers to academic performance,” he explained. Mr. Mutebi also highlighted the Higher Education Access Certificate (HEAC) program, currently operating in 63 districts, and advocated for Kabale University to admit HEAC graduates from both within and outside the district. He emphasized that FAWE continues to facilitate these students to access and succeed in bachelor’s degree programs.
Workshop participants unanimously agreed on the need to roll out the Extended Orientation Program across faculties, breaking it into smaller student groups to ensure deeper engagement and lasting impact. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Dean of Students, Mr. Amos Tukamushaba, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, appreciating FAWE Uganda for their partnership and dedication to educational empowerment. As Kabale University we are proud to be part of this progressive journey and remain committed to building an academic environment where every student can thrive—both inside and outside the lecture hall.
