Kabale University Engineering Students Participate in Pre-World Engineering Day 2025 Celebrations at Kyambogo University
Pre-World Engineering Day 2025 Celebrations at Kyambogo University
The Association of Chemical Engineering Students (ACES) organized the 2nd Pre-World Engineering Day Celebrations at Kyambogo University under the theme “Shaping Our Sustainable Future Through Engineering.” The event, held on February 28, 2025, brought together engineering students, industry professionals, and academic leaders to discuss sustainable solutions for global challenges.
Key Highlights
Prof. Augustine Osamor Ifelebuege (Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs, Victoria University) emphasized the role of education and workforce development in equipping engineers to tackle challenges like forest encroachment, pollution, and the energy crisis. He also introduced the concept of process intensification, highlighting how improving existing innovations can drive sustainability.
- On the other hand, Rodney Jonathan Sejjungo (Mechanical Engineer, Kyambogo University) discussed the impact of population growth and technology on sustainability, stressing the importance of Energy Returned Over Energy Invested (EROIE) when transitioning to renewable energy.
- Eng. Andrew Muhwezi (Former UIPE President, Uganda National Water & Sewerage Corporation) urged students to go beyond discussions and take real action by using industrial training to develop innovative solutions to Uganda’s challenges.
- Mr. Kawekwa Douglas (Founder, Mind Lyfe Ltd) focused on mental well-being, drawing attention to how stress, anxiety, and addiction hinder engineers from contributing effectively. He advised students to adopt sustainable habits for mental health, similar to how they design sustainable infrastructure.
Engaging Panel Discussions
Experts and students from Victoria University, Kyambogo University, and Kabale University explored key sustainability issues, including:
- Challenges in implementing sustainable energy, such as funding and policy gaps.
- The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in innovation and its energy demands.
- The need for efficient software to reduce energy consumption.
- Securing funding for student projects through practical, investor-friendly ideas and copyright protection.
Innovative Project Exhibitions
Engineering students from Kabale University and Victoria University showcased groundbreaking projects, including:
- An automated milk dispenser and an alcohol sensor for vehicles (Kabale University).
- A digital monitoring system for livestock and a student attendance-tracking security system (Victoria University).
Tree Planting for Sustainability
The event concluded with a tree-planting exercise at Kyambogo University, symbolizing the commitment to sustainability. The initiative was supported by Roofings Uganda Limited and involved students from Kyambogo University Engineering Students Society, Kabale University, and the Equity Leaders Program.
Takeaways and Conclusion
Sustainability is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers. However, it also starts at the individual level—small actions like reducing energy waste, minimizing plastic use, and adopting sustainable habits can collectively shape a greener future.
