Kabale University Institute of Language Studies gets a new Director

Dr. David Majariwa has been appointed the new Director for the Institute of Language Studies. He is taking over from Prof. Emmanuel John Muranga, who served as the Institute’s Director for the last two years from December 2019 to January 2022. The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday 1st of February 2022.

During the Handover ceremony, the Academic Registrar, Mr. Narcicir Tibenderana thanked Prof. Muranga for work well done during his tenure. During the period, he registered many achievements. Mr. Tibebenderana welcomed the new director to the office and called upon the staff to give him full support during his tenure for of growth of the Institute.

While addressing the Staff, the outgoing Director, Professor Emmanuel Muranga thanked Staff for the support accorded to him during his tenure of office. Professor Muranga thanked Management for giving him the privilege of serving as a Director and giving him a chance to serve the Institute as the Director.

He further observed that all languages are equal and to be developed. He pointed out that currently, many students have accepted Runyakitara as an important language. This was evidenced by the 2021 O and A level enrolment.  About twenty-eight thousand (28000) students sat for O’Level exams and about four thousand (4000) sat for A level exam in the language has year. “There is a lot of potential in Runyakitara and other languages being taught at Kabale University,” he observed.

Professor Egara Kabaji, the Visiting scholar, to the Institute of Language Studies under the Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA) Staff mobility programme, congratulated Prof Muranga for having successfully served his term as a Director. “Having completed your tour of duty as the Director, this is the opportune time to direct your energies in research and publications. “I became more productive academically after completing my tenure of duty as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology,” he observed.

The New Director Mr. David Majariwa appreciated the University Management for his new Appointment, Dr. Majariwa recently graduated with a Ph.D. in Kiswahili from the University of Dar es Salaam. Before that, he served on several occasions as the acting Director. He has also served as the Head of the Kiswahili department and has served in different capacities at Kabale University for the last thirteen years.

Dr. Majariwa thanked his predecessors right from the late Maria Gorretti Adubo Baale, Ms. Lillian Tidyebwa and the most recent one Prof. Email Muranga for the far they have brought the Institute of Language Studies, He called upon them to support him during his term of office. Dr. Majariwa said during his term in office, he will focus on teaching, Community Engagement, and Research

During the same function Staff from the Institute of Language, studies appreciated the work well done by their previous Directors through gifts.

The Institute of Language studies congratulated Dr. David Majariwa upon completing his Ph.D. in Kiswahili, a Program he pursued through the Staff Development Program of Kabale University.

Ms. Lillian Tidyebwa in her closing remarks thanked the Institute staff for remembering her after two years since she served as the Institute Director.

The event ended with cutting the Institutes cake to celebrate the great achievements, which have been registered in a number of fields.
