Kabale University Rukungiri Campus welcomes pioneer students

At our recently opened Rukungiri Campus in Buyanja, we are pleased to celebrate the registration of the first class of pioneer students. The campus was officially opened by the Chancellor of the University, Professor George Mondo Kangonyera, on 28th May 2025. A large portion of the pioneer class is comprised of students in the Faculty of Education who are participating in the recess program. When speaking to the students during the briefing, the Deputy Academic Registrar, Can Benon Kwikiriza, who is also the administrator responsible for overseeing the campus, expressed his joy at receiving the pioneer group. He considers this a moment of historical significance and awaited with great anticipation.

According to Can Kwikiriza, there were many consultations with various stakeholders, including the Diocese of North Kigezi (the founding body of the PTC), Ministry of Education and Sports, Mother Ministry, Ministry of Public Service, and National Council for Higher Education. “We needed to do so in order to obtain the necessary approvals for the conversion of the former Primary Teacher College into a campus” Kwikiriza said. Ultimately, all of these efforts culminated in the opening of the campus and subsequent registration of students for the approved programs.

Several pioneer students and staff members expressed their joy at being at the Kabale University campus in Rukungiri. The campus offers a very cool and clean study environment that will allow students to concentrate on their studies. Additionally, they expressed their happiness at being able to study close to their families. The two pioneering programmes are a Diploma in Primary Education and a Bachelor of Primary Education. The Rukungiri Campus is Kabale University’s fourth campus and is slated to become a center of education for agriculture, education, and information technology. The campus is expected to attract more students from the surrounding regions, providing them with access to quality education and diverse academic opportunities. With its strategic focus on key sectors, the Rukungiri Campus aims to contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the area by producing skilled graduates ready to address local and national challenges.
