Shaping the Future of Legal Practice through Innovation: Faculty of Law Hosts Second Annual Symposium

Kabale University’s Faculty of Law today, Tuesday, 14th April 2026, successfully hosted its second annual symposium under the Professional Development Programme, bringing together students, legal practitioners and distinguished guests to reflect on the evolving landscape of the legal profession.

Held under the theme “Innovation and the Future of Legal Practice,” the symposium provided a dynamic platform for dialogue on how legal education and practice must adapt to technological advancements and emerging global trends.

The event commenced at 9:00 AM with an opening prayer led by Ms. Amutuheire Rosemary, followed by the singing of the National, East African, and Kabale University Anthems, setting a formal and reflective tone for the day.

In her welcome remarks, the student representative, Ms. Philise Makhoha, underscored the importance of such engagements in bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world legal practice. She encouraged fellow students to actively participate and maximize the learning opportunity.

The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Charlotte Kabaseke, highlighted the steady growth of the faculty since its establishment two years ago, noting that the symposium is now an important annual platform for professional engagement. She also formally introduced faculty members and welcomed the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. Johnny Mugisha.

In his address, Prof. Mugisha commended the relevance of the symposium’s theme, emphasizing the increasing demand for access to justice in an era defined by globalization and digital transformation. He challenged students to reflect on their preparedness to thrive in a legal environment increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence and technological innovation. He also expressed appreciation to the Guest of Honour for her presence.

Delivering the keynote address, Lady Justice Bareebe Rosemary Ngabirano, Resident Judge of the Mukono High Court Circuit, shared insights drawn from over 27 years of experience in the judiciary. She described the engagement as both timely and critical, noting the central role of young legal professionals in shaping the future of the justice system.

Justice Bareebe emphasized the importance of innovation in addressing persistent challenges such as case backlog, urging students to embrace emerging technologies including artificial intelligence and electronic court systems. She noted that proficiency in digital tools is no longer optional but essential for modern legal practice. She further highlighted Uganda’s progress in mediation and encouraged students to remain adaptable and open to continuous learning across diverse sectors.

Drawing from her personal journey, she spoke on the importance of resilience, balance, and intentional growth, encouraging students to explore opportunities beyond traditional legal pathways. She challenged them to identify unique niches and leverage their knowledge to create sustainable livelihoods, including through digital platforms.

The interactive session that followed demonstrated strong student engagement. Participants raised pertinent questions on balancing academic demands with personal interests, managing professional growth alongside family responsibilities, and adapting to technological systems such as the Electronic Court Case Management Information System (ECCMIS).

A notable moment during the symposium saw a student present a locally produced product to the Guest of Honour, reflecting the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship encouraged throughout the discussions.

In her concluding remarks, Justice Bareebe called upon students to reflect on their role as future change-makers within the legal profession, urging them to actively contribute to the transformation of the judiciary and the broader justice system.

The symposium provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, professional exposure, and inspiration, reaffirming Kabale University’s commitment to equipping its law students with the skills and perspectives necessary to succeed in a dynamic and evolving legal landscape.
