Kabale University Shines at Mbarara University Innovation Week 2026
Kabale University has reaffirmed its position as a rising force in research and innovation following an exceptional performance at the Mbarara University Engineering Students (MUES) Innovation Week 2026, held from April 13th to 17th at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
Convened under the theme “Building a Better World Through Research and Innovation,” the prestigious annual event brought together leading science and engineering institutions, including Kampala International University, Soroti University, Ndejje University, Ernest Cook University, and Kadogo Polytechnic. The platform fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas through research presentations, innovation contests, and exhibitions, further strengthening collaboration across Uganda’s academic landscape.
The event attracted key industry stakeholders such as Nile Breweries Limited and Fundi Bots, underscoring the growing synergy between academia and industry in advancing technological solutions.
In his keynote remarks, the Dean of the host engineering school emphasized that innovation is born when ideas are translated into practical solutions. He highlighted the importance of such engagements in sharpening critical thinking, addressing real-world community challenges, and bridging the gap between classroom theory and industrial practice.
Kabale University’s Engineering School delivered a stellar performance across all categories, standing out among participating institutions.
In the highly competitive paper contest, Mr. Paradise Mwebabaze and Mr. Gimugu Joshua presented an insightful study titled “Assessment of the Impact of Iron Ore Mining on Harvested Rainwater Quality in Kabale District.” Their well-articulated research not only set the tone for the competition but also emerged as the overall winner, earning top honors and significantly boosting the University’s academic reputation.
In the exhibitions category, Kabale University showcased four innovative and impactful projects aligned with community needs, a Revolutionized Solar Thermal Chick Incubator designed to support poultry farming in the cold Kigezi sub-region, Aquamap Smart Precision Irrigation System, promoting efficient and sustainable water use in agriculture. An Automated Irrigation System with Weather Synchronization, enhancing resilience in arid and semi-arid conditions, A research project on the Self-Cleansing Capacity of Lake Bunyonyi, advancing environmental sustainability efforts. These innovations demonstrate Kabale University’s commitment to developing practical, locally relevant solutions that directly impact communities.

The University also commends its dedicated staff mentors, Mrs. Akakwasa Joan and Mr. Byamukama Denis, for their invaluable guidance throughout the preparation and participation process.
