Kabale University Innovation Booster Boot Camp Inspires Students to Become Job Creators

IMG_0361Kabale University has successfully concluded a transformative five day Innovation Booster Boot Camp aimed at equipping students with practical entrepreneurial and innovation skills to become job creators rather than job seekers.

The boot camp, which ended today, Friday, 8th May 2026, brought together student innovators and staff mentors to develop market ready solutions to address real community challenges. The training was facilitated by Mr. Enock Ampumuza, Assistant Programs/Business Incubation management from the African Agribusiness Incubators Network. Using the Business Model Canvas, innovators were guided to refine their concepts into structured, market-oriented solutions.DSC_0392

Speaking during the closing session, Deputy Chief Directorate of Research and Grants, Kabale University, Prof. Agnes Ariho Babugura emphasized the university’s growing commitment to innovation-driven solutions that directly impact communities.

“We have mainly focused on research journals, but now we are also addressing problems that exist on the ground,” she noted. “What we are doing is creating solutions through innovative ways. Beyond that, we are preparing students not to become job seekers after graduation, but job creators who can commercialize innovative ideas.”

IMG_0445Prof. Agnes highlighted the remarkable mindset shift among both students and staff throughout the boot camp, noting that participants had gained a deeper understanding of how innovation differs from traditional research while complementing it.

“Researchers and innovators can work together. That is why we are promoting a multidisciplinary approach where research findings can support innovation and community transformation,” she added.

The Senior Research Grants Administrator, Kabale University, Jacqueline Akello, described the initiative as the university’s first ever innovation boot camp focused on nurturing students, youth, and aspiring innovators through mentorship and practical exposure.

DSC_0317According to Madam Akello, participants underwent a competitive application and screening process before joining the program.

“Students are being supported by staff mentors, and we are excited that the way participants came is not the way they are leaving,” she said. “This is only the beginning. We are seeing students and staff becoming more focused, innovative, and eager to work together.”

She further revealed that promising innovators will receive additional support through the Kabale University Business Incubation Centre (KABBIC), where ideas will continue to be refined and scaled into viable enterprises.

Akello encouraged students and staff to embrace teamwork and innovation as pathways toward employment creation and economic empowerment.

Among the standout participants was Ayebare Odone, who presented an innovative project focused on biodegradable plastics aimed at protecting the environment.

Odone explained that the boot camp had equipped him with practical business and financial management skills necessary to transform his innovation into a sustainable enterprise capable of employing fellow youth.

“My innovation is aimed at protecting the environment through the creation of biodegradable plastics,” he said. “These plastics will replace conventional plastics that harm ecosystems and alter soil quality.”

He added that such innovation focused training is critical in helping students rethink the traditional dependence on white collar employment and instead embrace entrepreneurship and self-employment opportunities.
