Kabale University, CIP Explore Strategic Partnership to Strengthen Potato Value Chain Development

Dr. Norman Kwikiriza

Kabale University, through its Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, on 15th December 2025 hosted a high level roundtable discussion with representatives from the International Potato Center (CIP) aimed at exploring strategic areas of collaboration to advance agricultural development in the region.

The engagement brought together Kabale University academic leadership and CIP representatives, Dr. Norman Kwikiriza and Mr. Peluna Francis, for an in depth exchange on shared priorities within the potato value chain. Discussions focused on key areas including the production of quality seed, increased and sustainable potato production, establishment of efficient supply systems, and the development of a dedicated centre for seed multiplication. The meeting also highlighted opportunities for joint training programmes and collaborative research supervision for students.

As a significant outcome of the roundtable, both institutions agreed to initiate the process of drafting a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize the partnership. While formal documentation is being prepared, CIP will commence hands on practical training for Kabale University students, providing immediate opportunities for skills enhancement, experiential learning, and knowledge transfer.

This prospective partnership reflects a shared commitment by Kabale University and the International Potato Center to promote agricultural innovation, strengthen capacity building, and support sustainable development of the potato value chain. The collaboration is expected to contribute meaningfully to food security, research excellence, and community impact within the region and beyond.

Kabale University looks forward to a productive and mutually beneficial engagement as the partnership takes shape.
