Kabale University Excels at the 2025 East Africa Inter-University Staff Tournament and Umuganda Activity in Kigali

Kabale University proudly participated in the 2025 East Africa Inter-University Staff Tournament and Umuganda community service activity in Kigali, Rwanda, from July 25 – 27, 2025. The event brought together universities across the region to celebrate sportsmanship, cultural heritage, and community service, strengthening collaboration and integration within East Africa.

The East Africa Inter-University Staff Tournament is more than a sporting event. It is a regional platform that:

  • Promotes staff wellness and physical fitness through active engagement.
  • Encourages collaboration and institutional partnerships.
  • Strengthens interpersonal relationships and regional integration.
  • Creates opportunities for sharing best practices in governance and staff development.
  • Showcases East Africa’s rich cultural traditions.

This year’s edition, hosted at Green Hills School in Kigali, drew participants from across the region, each demonstrating their commitment to unity and professional development.

Kabale University was represented by a team of 42 staff members. Prior to departure, the delegation underwent thorough preparation through orientation and coordination meetings to ensure smooth logistics, team selection, and effective representation.

The send-off was presided over by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) and the Dean of Students, who encouraged the delegation to uphold the University’s values of discipline, resilience, and excellence.

One of the highlights of the trip was Kabale University’s participation in Umuganda, a deeply rooted Rwandan tradition.
Translated from Kinyarwanda as “coming together in common purpose to achieve an outcome”, Umuganda takes place on the last Saturday of every month. During this time, Rwandans from all walks of life set aside personal business, close shops, pause traffic, and join hands in community work.

Typical Umuganda projects include litter cleanup, tree planting, repairing infrastructure, and building homes for the vulnerable. The practice is central to Rwanda’s social and economic progress, and visitors are warmly welcomed to participate. It is no coincidence that Rwanda is often described as the cleanest country in Africa.

On July 26, 2025, Kabale University staff joined the local community and alumni in Kigali for Umuganda. Their assignment involved constructing and clearing water trenches to combat gully erosion. Staff worked alongside residents with dedication and teamwork, earning admiration while deepening bonds of friendship and solidarity across borders.

Following the community service, Kabale University showcased exceptional talent in the sports competitions.

  • The team drew in their opening match against the University of Rwanda.
  • They impressed in a spirited face-off with Mount Kigali University.
  • On July 27, Kabale University advanced to the quarter-finals, ultimately securing third place and bringing home a bronze medal.

The achievement was a proud reflection of the University’s discipline, commitment, and competitive spirit.

Beyond the matches and community service, the trip created lasting memories of teamwork, cultural exchange, and shared purpose. The University’s participation elevated its visibility, promoted staff development, and strengthened ties with regional peers.

Kabale University extends gratitude to its Management for generously providing transport, accommodation, participation fees, and welfare support. The University also appreciates the host institutions, the organizing committee, and the Kabale University Liaison Office in Rwanda for their warm welcome and coordination.

With this success, Kabale University looks forward to future editions of the tournament. The delegation encourages even broader staff participation to further strengthen institutional growth, visibility, and regional integration.
