Kabale University Strengthens Research and Innovation through KAB-FIR Information Session

The Directorate of Research and Grants (DRG) at Kabale University held an engaging and informative session for applicants to the Kabale University Fund for Innovation and Research (KAB-FIR) on 6th November 2025 at Heras Resort Hotel, Kabale. The session aimed at equipping participants with detailed guidance on proposal writing, project implementation, and completion processes under the internal grants programme.

Following the recent Expression of Interest (EOI) call that ran from 24th October to 3rd November 2025, the DRG received 68 EOIs from across various faculties. The event attracted 82 participants, including Faculty Research and Grants Coordinators, Principal Investigators, Co-Investigators and students keen on contributing to innovations and applied research.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Julius Alexander Arinaitwe, Chief of the Directorate of Research and Grants, emphasized the University’s commitment to building a robust research culture that addresses community challenges and fosters innovation. He encouraged participants to submit high-quality proposals aligned with Kabale University’s research agenda, noting that 30% of available grants will support innovations, while 70% will fund basic and applied research projects.

The workshop featured a series of presentations and discussions led by experts from the Directorate and supporting units. Among the facilitators were:

Participants received practical insights into the grants management process, covering proposal submission, budgeting, accountability, procurement and ethical clearance. The interactive discussions generated valuable ideas that will inform the refinement of the criteria and guidelines for managing the granting process.

Assoc. Prof. Babugura commended participants for their active involvement and underscored the importance of collaboration across disciplines to produce impactful research and innovations. She reaffirmed DRG’s commitment to ensuring transparency and support throughout the application and implementation stages.

Proposals for KAB-FIR funding are expected to be submitted by 3rd December 2025, after which the evaluation process will commence.

The Directorate expressed optimism that the initiative will continue to stimulate creativity, innovation, and evidence-based research that contributes to national development and the realization of Kabale University’s mission as a center of excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement.
