Kabale University Celebrates World Mental Health Day: Promoting a Culture of Well-being
Kabale University, celebrated World Mental Health Day today the October 30th, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being and raising awareness about mental health issues. The event brought together students, staff and the Mental Health Management Committee that was established by the Kabale University Senate.
World Mental Health Day is recognized globally as a day to acknowledge the significance of mental health and advocate for greater understanding, support, and the destigmatization of mental health conditions.
Assoc Prof. Edward Bantu a Professor of Counselling Psychology at Kabale University spoke passionately about the University’s commitment to promoting mental health. He emphasized that mental health is an essential aspect of the overall well-being of students and the university community.
He emphasized that Depression, PTSD, Suicides, and Gambling, are all psychological problems that affect students, staff, and everyone.
Professor Bantu also said that there is a need for the government to set up avenues where people can share their grievances and frustrations especially those who have been harassed and discriminated against.
He expressed his gratitude to the University management and University senate for drawing a nine-member committee that is made up of Faculty/Institute/School representatives.
“Kabale University recognizes the profound impact that mental health has on its students’ academic performance and their lives as a whole. We are ready to hear, to Listen, to care, to promote mental health services. We are dedicated to fostering a supportive environment where students can thrive not only academically but emotionally and mentally,” stated Assoc Prof. Edward Bantu.
The university’s celebration of World Mental Health Day included a question-and-answer session from students.The Mental Health Management Committee at Kabale University was established by the Kabale University Senate and the theme for this year emphasizes the importance of taking immediate measures to ensure that:
- Mental health is acknowledged, encouraged, and safeguarded.
- Everyone is empowered to exercise their human rights.
- There is widespread access to high-quality mental health services.
This year’s World Mental Health Day celebration at Kabale University highlights the university’s commitment to not only imparting knowledge but also supporting the emotional and mental well-being of its community members. The event served as a reminder of the importance of open conversations about mental health and the need to foster a culture of care and support within educational institutions.
