Bridging the Service Gap: PUM Expert Leads Training for Excellence in Hospitality and Internships at Kabale University.

The Kabale University Institute of Tourism and Hospitality is proud to host Berend Heringa, a seasoned Hospitality Education Expert from PUM Netherlands, for a week-long Training of Trainers program focused on customer service excellence and effective internship practices. The training, scheduled from 7th to 14th May 2025, marks a significant step toward strengthening hospitality standards in the region.

PUM, a purpose-driven organisation from the Netherlands, is renowned for its network of 1,200 volunteer experts who support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across more than 30 countries. Their mission is to empower local entrepreneurs by sharing knowledge that drives social, ecological, and economic progress—creating a ripple of positive impact worldwide.

Throughout the week, the Institute will facilitate interactive training sessions with key stakeholders, including students, faculty members, and hospitality professionals. The initiative seeks to enhance practical skills, foster industry-academic collaboration, and address a pressing gap in the sector: quality apprenticeship opportunities.

Speaking at a preparatory meeting held at White Horse Inn, Mr. Cuthbert Tukundane—PUM’s local representative for the Western region—highlighted the importance of institutional partnerships in shaping future hospitality professionals. “It is the institutions that train students who later become part of the workforce. By strengthening internships and customer service skills now, we build better service delivery for tomorrow,” he noted.

As part of the initiative, plans are underway to establish a collaborative group of hotel and lodge owners, with the goal of promoting in-house training and sustained mentorship. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for 22nd May 2025 to evaluate the outcomes of the training and chart a path forward.

This collaboration between PUM and the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality promises to be a catalyst for sustainable growth and excellence in the region’s tourism sector.
