Scholars from Kabale University participate in the MAPS 2nd Summer School on Migration Research in Tanzania

Researchers from Kabale University are participating in the second Migration and Displacement Action Plan for Sub-Saharan Africa project (MAPS) Summer School on Research Methods and Strategies, Data Collection and Analysis in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This week-long intensive training program was organized under the Migration and Displacement Action Plan for Sub-Saharan Africa (MAPS) and was held at Ramada Resort. In addition to researchers, academics and policy-oriented scholars from across Africa and Europe, the summer school brings together policy-oriented scholars and researchers. This Summer School aims to advance methodological competencies in qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research, with a focus on migration, displacement, climate change, spatial analysis and ethical data management.

The Summer School began on the 2nd of February 2026. This school is being held at RAMADA Resort by Wyndham Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. At this summer school, experts in migration and researchers participating in the MAPS project will discuss innovative strategies to address migration and displacement challenges in the region. A series of workshops, lectures and collaborative sessions held at the summer school have a focus on developing actionable solutions to key migration and forced displacement issues.

By promoting evidence-based insights, the MAPS Project aims to enhance understanding of multiple factors driving mobility in Sub-Saharan Africa. In order to respond to complex migration dynamics, this EU-funded research initiative examines how demographic pressures, environmental degradation, economic disparities and political instability are intertwined. Research is being conducted in ten African countries by the consortium. This focuses on the interplay between demographic pressures, environmental degradation and economic disparities. This research will be conducted in 10 sub saharan African countries. These are Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea, South Sudan, and South Africa.

Kabale University is represented at the summer school by a multidisciplinary team of researchers. A number of activities were planned for the summer school, such as facilitator-led sessions, working group sessions, and field-based learning sessions. The Participants are benefitting from expert-led sessions delivered by distinguished scholars from leading institutions, such as Sapienza University of Rome, University of Barcelona, University of Dodoma, Università degli Studi di Brescia, University Luav of Venice, AMREF International University, Kabale University and other members of the MAPS consortium. Under this program, other scholars from South Sudan, Senegal and Guinea are attached to Kabale University.
