Kabale University Freshers Warned Against Night Movement as Orientation Continues

Kabale, Uganda – August 12, 2026: Newly admitted students at Kabale University have been urged to prioritize personal safety, avoid unnecessary movement at night and remain vigilant as they adjust to university life and a new environment.

The call was made by the University’s Principal Communications and Branding Officer, Godfrey Joseph Sempungu, during the ongoing orientation programme for new students at the Kikungiri Main Campus.

The orientation, which commenced on August 8, 2026, is running until August 28, 2026, with sessions taking place at Teaching Facility Level One and the kABSOM Building. Registration and verification of students are being conducted at designated university tents.

Freshers Urged to Prioritize Personal Safety

Sempungu cautioned new students against walking alone or returning to their hostels late at night, noting that many are still unfamiliar with the university and its surrounding community.

“You need to be careful and mind the time when you are supposed to go to your hostels, especially during the night, because you are not yet used to the environment and people around you,” Sempungu warned.

He noted that unnecessary movement at night, particularly along isolated roads, could expose students to security risks, including theft.

Sempungu encouraged students to exercise their newfound independence responsibly and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

“Walk during safe hours. Don’t unnecessarily exercise your freedom by walking at night,” he advised.

He also reminded students that the University has a police station that provides security and other police services to students and staff. He encouraged freshers to familiarize themselves with its location and seek assistance from the Officer in Charge whenever they encounter security concerns.

Responsible Conduct is Essential

Beyond personal security, Sempungu urged the new students to conduct themselves responsibly both on and off campus, emphasizing that their actions can influence the reputation of Kabale University.

“The primary reason for being here is to study, and we are going to give you the best of our services,” he said.

He further encouraged students to use the University’s official communication platforms to access accurate and timely information about academic programmes, activities and administrative decisions.

Sempungu cautioned students against relying on unverified information from unofficial sources, urging them to confirm important information through authorized University channels.

“You will need to connect to all our platforms to continually get live updates because we share updates with students every day,” he said.

Guild Leadership Calls for Vigilance

The 10th Kabale University Guild President, H.E. Justus Drake Kyarikunda, also welcomed the freshers and encouraged them to remain focused on their studies while making responsible decisions throughout their university journey.

Kyarikunda said the Guild leadership is working closely with the University administration to support students and contribute to a positive university experience.

He reminded freshers that university life comes with greater personal responsibility compared to secondary school, where students are closely supervised.

“Here the university is kind of different. No one will call you for the lecture. You can be free. So I urge you to be more vigilant and also to be more careful as you are here at campus,” Kyarikunda said.

He further encouraged students to remain focused on their academic goals and exercise caution in their social relationships, particularly when dealing with peer pressure.

“Do what brought you here. Anything you do, be more careful because you came here alone and you go back alone,” he advised.

Freshers Introduced to Digital Learning Platforms

The orientation programme is also equipping new students with essential digital skills to support their academic journey.

The E-Learning Office, working together with the Communications Office and the Directorate of ICT, is training students on the University’s digital learning environment, including the e-learning platform, student portal, Kabville and student email services.

Students are being guided on how to access learning materials, submit assignments and undertake online assessments.

University officials said the training is intended to help students adapt to digital learning and access academic services more efficiently.

Making the Most of University Life

Sempungu also encouraged freshers to take advantage of Kabale University’s location in southwestern Uganda, describing the region’s cultural and geographical diversity as an opportunity for students to broaden their experiences beyond the classroom.

He highlighted the University’s proximity to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as well as the region’s diverse cultures and communities, as opportunities for students to gain broader social and professional experiences.

He urged the new students to make the most of their time at Kabale University while preparing for life beyond graduation.

“Enjoy the time you are here because this is going to be an enriching experience, transitioning between that level to the professional world,” he said.

The orientation programme continues until August 28, 2026, covering key areas including University regulations, academic programmes, student services, digital platforms, security and responsible conduct.

As registration and orientation activities continue, University officials and student leaders have called upon the new students to remain focused, responsible, vigilant and committed to academic excellence as they begin their journey at Kabale University.
