Bunyoro-Kitara Prime Minister commends Kabale University for teaching local languages
The Prime Minister for Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, Omuhikirwa Owek. Andrew K. Byakutaga has commended Kabale University for teaching local languages such as Runyakitara.
He said this during while addressing headteachers and directors of schools in the Kingdom. The Kabale University team of Lecturers and the Senior Communications and Branding Officer had paid a courtesy visit to the Kingdom to see possible ways of collaboration.
Owek. Byakutaga noted that teaching local languages was very important in the development of a child’s life. “When I was in Norway, I realized that they also teach their children in their local language alongside English”, he added.
He further implored the government to make to make mother tongues compulsory in secondary schools. “I would like to thank Kabale University for training teachers in Runyakitara. This will help us get teachers to teach in our secondary schools”, he added.
During the meeting, the headteachers requested the Prime Minister to give bursaries to teachers who want to do the Runyakitara course at KAB university.
The team has been on a week-long community outreach program to provide career guidance to secondary school students in the Tooro and Bunyoro sub-regions.
