Kabale University Assumes Leadership at Rukungiri Primary Teacher’s College in Light of National Education Reform

In a move aligned with the government’s strategic overhaul of the education sector, Kabale University took over the management of Rukungiri Primary Teacher’s College and this literary means that the PTC will now operate under the stewardship of Kabale University.

This transition comes as part of a broader initiative by the government to phase out Primary Teachers’ Colleges across the country, marking a pivotal shift in the landscape of teachers’ education in Uganda. The decision to restructure the educational framework stems from the implementation of a new teachers’ education policy, aiming to enhance the quality of teacher training programs and ultimately improve the standard of education in the nation.

The formal handover ceremony took place yesterday the 30th of November at the college premises in Nyakeina parish, Buyanja sub-county Rukungiri District, and was presided over by the Rt Rev Onesimus Asiimwe the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Bishop Emeritus Patrick Tugume, and Dr. Annet Mugisha Kajura, a commissioner from the Ministry of Education and Sports.

According to Dr. Annet Mugisha Kajura, the government is committed to facilitating a seamless transition. She said that efforts are underway to provide necessary support mechanisms, including training opportunities and resource allocation, to ensure a smooth continuation of academic operations during this period of transformation.

Speaking on behalf of Kabale University, the Vice chancellor Prof. Joy C. Kwesiga expressed enthusiasm about this collaborative endeavor, emphasizing the institution’s dedication to elevating the standards of teacher education and contributing to the nation’s educational development.

Professor Prof. Joy Kwesiga further expressed gratitude to the Bishop and the PTC stakeholders for their support and pledged commitment to upholding the rich educational heritage of Rukungiri Primary Teacher’s College.

The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese Rt Rev Onesimus Asiimwe in his address, lauded the partnership as an inspiration of hope for the region’s educational future calling upon the University management to Uphold the PTC’s core values.

“Education is the foundation of progress and transformation. This collaboration between Kabale University and Rukungiri Primary Teacher’s College signals a new era of educational excellence and innovation,” he decreed.

The ceremony, held at the campus of Rukungiri Primary Teacher’s College, was graced by dignitaries, clergy, education officials, Political and community leaders.

The collaboration aims to integrate resources, expertise, and academic programs to enrich the educational experience for students and faculty. It is anticipated that this union will lead to an expanded curriculum, increased research opportunities, and access to advanced facilities for both institutions.

The transition process will prioritize preserving Rukungiri Primary Teacher’s College’s esteemed traditions and values while incorporating modern teaching methodologies and resources from Kabale University.
