A student at the KAB Faculty of Engineering received an award for their innovation of an automated potato peeling machine. Amon Katto, a final year student of Mechanical Engineering, made the innovation under a project titled ‘The Design and Prototyping of an Automatic Potato Peeling Machine’ under the supervision of Mr. Isaac Ndawula and Mr. Twine Usito Bakesigaki, the Head of the Department.

Katto scooped the award during the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers’ annual National Technology Conference and Exhibition that was held in Kampala at Hotel Africana on 18th and 19th August 2023.

The award was received by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Technology, Applied Design, and Fine Art, who later delivered it to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joy Kwesiga.

This year’s exhibition was held under the theme ‘Tapping Engineering Opportunities for Accelerated Africa’s Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) Implementation – Uganda’s Perspective’.

The conference was attended by engineers, scientists, and other important dignitaries mainly from East Africa. A team of 10 lecturers and students from KAB attended the function.

KAB was represented through presentations by Eng. Dr. Anania Mbabazi, a member of the faculty in the Department of Civil Engineering. He presented a paper entitled ‘Perpetual Pavement Design in Support of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) Implementation: Case Study of Kampala – Jinja Expressway’.  In addition, Mr. Lodgers Mandera, a final year student majoring in Civil Engineering, exhibited his final project titled ‘The Effect of Partial Replacement of Coarse Aggregates in Concrete with Recycled Plastic’.
