Kabale University Education Students Lead HIV/AIDS Awareness Outreach in Kanungu
Kabale University continues to extend its community engagement efforts through impactful health awareness initiatives. On Friday, 17th April 2026, a team from the Kabale University Education Students Association, under the Faculty of Education, conducted a peer-to-peer HIV/AIDS awareness outreach at Nyaka Vocational Secondary School in Kambuga Town Council, Kanungu District.
The outreach, led by the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Education, Dr. Florence Kirabo Nampijja, brought together university students and secondary school learners in an interactive and educative engagement aimed at promoting informed decision-making and responsible behaviour among young people.
The activity featured a series of dynamic role plays and discussions designed to address critical issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. Through peer-led demonstrations, the team tackled common myths and facts about HIV/AIDS, clarified modes of transmission and non-transmission, and highlighted the current realities facing young people. Particular emphasis was placed on the influence of peer pressure, the risks associated with substance abuse and practical strategies for avoiding behaviours that increase vulnerability to HIV infection.
In addition, dialogue sessions focusing on peer influence and essential life skills were conducted. These engagements encouraged students to build confidence in saying no, strengthen self-esteem and self-respect, develop sound decision-making skills and cultivate supportive and positive friendships.
To ensure lasting impact, secondary school learners participated in reflective activities, where they shared personal insights on behavioural changes they intend to adopt following the interaction. They also wrote commitment messages and pledges as a demonstration of their resolve to make safer and healthier life choices.
This outreach reflects Kabale University’s commitment to community service, student empowerment, and the promotion of public health awareness. By equipping young people with accurate information and practical life skills, the University continues to play a vital role in the fight against HIV/AIDS and in shaping a responsible and informed generation.
