Kabale University Surgical Society Inspires Kigezi High School Students Through Mentorship Outreach

Kabale University’s commitment to nurturing future healthcare professionals was recently demonstrated through a mentorship and career guidance outreach conducted by members of the Kabale University Surgical Society at Kigezi High School on Sunday, 21st June 2026.

The outreach brought together Senior Five and Senior Six Biology students for an engaging session that provided insights into medical education, career pathways in healthcare, and the realities of pursuing a career in medicine. The team comprised Master of Medicine (MMed) General Surgery residents, a finalist in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, and undergraduate medical students in their second to fourth years.

During the interactive session, the medical trainees shared their personal academic journeys, offering students a first-hand perspective on the transition from Advanced Level education to medical school. They highlighted the dedication, resilience, and discipline required to succeed in the medical profession while addressing common misconceptions about medical training.

One of the highlights of the engagement was an inspiring testimony from a fourth-year medical student who initially pursued a diploma in Architecture before transitioning to medicine. The story resonated strongly with the learners, emphasizing the importance of determination, adaptability, and pursuing one’s passion despite challenges or changes in career direction.

The outreach team also had an opportunity to reconnect with a student who had previously benefited from a scoliosis outreach camp organized by Kabale University. The student reported remarkable improvement and expressed gratitude to the university’s surgical team for the care received. The encounter underscored the lasting impact of community-based healthcare initiatives and the importance of sustained patient follow-up.

Students actively participated in the discussions, seeking guidance on medical school admissions, training pathways, career opportunities, and life as healthcare professionals. The interactive nature of the session provided a valuable platform for learners to gain clarity on their academic and career aspirations.

Speaking after the outreach, members of the Kabale University Surgical Society noted that the initiative was intended to inspire students to pursue their dreams with confidence while exposing them to opportunities available within the health sciences.

The mentorship outreach forms part of Kabale University’s broader commitment to community engagement, career guidance, and strengthening the pipeline of future healthcare professionals in Uganda. Through such initiatives, the university continues to bridge the gap between secondary education and professional training while fostering a culture of service, excellence, and social responsibility.

The Kabale University Surgical Society reaffirmed its commitment to extending similar mentorship programs to more schools across the region, with the aim of inspiring the next generation of healthcare leaders.
