Kabale University Medical School Strengthens International Collaboration Through Erasmus+ Visit to Slovenia
Kabale University School of Medicine (KABSOM) has strengthened its international academic partnerships following a successful Erasmus+ staff mobility visit to Slovenia, where a delegation engaged with leading medical institutions to advance collaboration in medical education, research and clinical training.
The three-member delegation comprising Dr. Sam Tumwesigire, Dr. Isabella Epiu, and Ms. Idah Sunday visited the University Clinical Centre Maribor, the University of Maribor, and the University of Ljubljana from 5th to 13th March 2026. The visit was conducted under the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility framework and followed an invitation extended by Dr. Alenka Strdin, who previously served as a guest speaker at the 3rd World Day of Regional Anaesthesia hosted by KABSOM earlier this year.
The visit aimed to strengthen institutional collaboration, explore bilateral exchange opportunities for staff and students, and deepen academic partnerships between Kabale University and Slovenian medical institutions. Discussions also focused on benchmarking training facilities, simulation centres, and clinical teaching environments to enhance medical education at KABSOM.
During their engagement at the University of Maribor, the delegation delivered presentations on the Kabale University School of Medicine and shared perspectives on medical education, clinical training, and global health. They also participated in academic discussions covering paediatrics, obstetric anaesthesia in Africa, simulation-based training, and international cooperation.
The team further held strategic meetings with university leadership and hospital management to explore opportunities for joint research projects, staff and student mobility programmes, and the development of long-term institutional partnerships. The delegation also visited several departments including Anaesthesia and Critical Care, Surgical Intensive Therapy, paediatrics, specialised laboratories, and the university’s medical simulation facilities.
In addition to their engagements in Maribor, the delegation visited the University of Ljubljana, where discussions focused on expanding Erasmus+ mobility programmes, particularly clinical rotations for medical students, as well as collaborative research in anaesthesia, critical care, and public health.
The visit provided an opportunity for KABSOM representatives to gain valuable insights into European medical education systems, advanced simulation-based training models, and structured clinical teaching environments. These experiences are expected to contribute significantly to strengthening teaching, research, and clinical training at Kabale University.
The delegation also established important professional networks with Slovenian faculty members, researchers, and administrators, laying a strong foundation for sustained collaboration between the institutions.
The host institution, through Dr. Faris Mujezinović, Vice Dean for International Cooperation, confirmed the successful completion of all training activities on 13th March 2026 in a signed Letter of Confirmation.
According to the report, the visit marks a major milestone in the internationalization strategy of Kabale University School of Medicine, supporting its mission to expand global partnerships, enhance academic visibility, and integrate international best practices into medical education and healthcare training.
The engagement also paved the way for strengthened bilateral agreements that will enable more frequent exchange opportunities for KABSOM staff and students with European medical institutions.
